Area Manager

May - July 2018 • Hebron, KY

What I liked

The role as an area manger is to run an efficient shift and delegate your associates accordingly. As an intern, without the experience of managing a shift, my role was more project based. It was a great opportunity to develop my management skills and analytical skills. Professional development was a high priority of the 10 week program. I really liked the team I worked with. I believe that makes and breaks a lot of internship experiences across all companies.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different was the lack of effort of bringing other interns from the surrounding fulfillment centers and putting on an event or two for all of us to get to know each other better.

Advice

Take advantage of the other side of the fulfillment center. As an inbound intern, I did not spend much time at all in the outbound process, but thats half of the whole job. I didn't necessarily need to master the outbound process as I did the inbound process, but getting familiar with the second half of the warehouse would have stretched my knowledge more.

What I wish was different

Getting an offer.

Advice

Be as proactive as possible. Don’t be intimidated by the ambiguity. Take the initiative, it’s the number one thing they’ll be judging you on. Max prepare for the stand and deliver, it’s the number two thing they’ll judge you on.

Software Development Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed living somewhere new, meeting new people with similar interests as me, and exploring my future career.

What I wish was different

I wish the recruitment and interview process had gone smoother. At the end of my interview process, I was told I did not get the internship, so I looked at my other options. Then, a few weeks later, I was told that an Amazon internship spot had opened up. I heard from my fellow interns that quite a few had similar experiences.

Advice

Don't be afraid to try new things.

Software Development Intern

May - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I was given an individual project working on backend and infrastructure development, which was large enough to challenge me while also taking advantage of my existing skills. My team manager and mentors had excellent communication skills and were consistently encouraging and motivating, meeting with me daily / weekly to go over my progress and help with planning. The biggest strength in my experience at Amazon was the lengths that the team went to ensure good team communication and productivity; a large amount of time was spent documenting and testing your code and working with others to integrate the project I built into a larger system. It was exciting to see a project take shape that would be used in the real world, and Amazon seems to do a good job placing interns with practical projects that will create a real value for the team. My manager was clear early on about expectations for a return offer and provided guidance along the internship to help me progress towards this goal.

What I wish was different

At times the project itself was tedious; I'd wish I had the opportunity to work on more than one project since working on a single long-term project only provides a limited amount of experience and can be hard at times. Working on a single project has advantages as you will build skills significantly in one area, but can be discouraging at times as the long-term work on a single project is significantly different from what you experience as an undergraduate and takes adjusting to.

Advice

Take the time to explore the location that you work - If you get a return offer, you'll most likely be returning to the same city. The internship is not only an opportunity for you to build your skills and work towards a full-time job, but also a valuable time to explore the software industry lifestyle and find a place that you would be comfortable living long-term after college.

Software Development Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

Everyone I worked with was friendly, honest, hardworking and reliable. This dedication to success was inspiring and I enjoyed working there. The intern events were interesting, and it was nice getting the chance to experience living near Seattle.

What I wish was different

My team was a small group of developers in charge of a rapidly growing product, so management was always pretty busy. This didn't leave as much time for one on ones with my manager, or time to speak with senior developers, as I'd have liked. If o could change one thing, I would love to have had more time to speak with the amazing people I worked with there.

Advice

If you're on the fence about interning with Amazon, go for it! You won't regret it. It was an amazing experience that taught me more than I can express in a few paragraphs. Get ready to see your code in action!

SDE Intern

May - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

My team was extremely supportive and gave me a meaningful project that was able to be shipped to production. Since my team had a lot of combined experience, I was also able to learn a lot from my team about different best practices and technologies. I also had the chance to meet hundreds of other interns, as well as live with them.

What I wish was different

I wish that the provided housing had been better. It was advertised as having a fully equipped kitchen, however I stayed in a dorm that had only communal kitchens.
