Auditing Intern

June - August 2019 • Portland, OR

What I liked

The interview process was very convenient, right on campus. I really enjoyed the summer getting to know all of the audit professionals and learning about my future career in the audit practice.

What I wish was different

Advice

If you are planning on going into the accounting profession, work for a company where you feel like you fit into the company culture. One of the main reasons I chose to intern at KPMG over other firms, was that the people made me feel very comfortable and welcome.

Tax Intern

June - August 2019 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed living and working in San Francisco. KPMG is a great company and did everything they could to make sure I was growing my knowledge and having a positive experience.

What I wish was different

San Francisco is beautiful, but incredibly expensive. I wish that KPMG's compensation in San Francisco was adjusted accordingly, but instead I made a similar amount of money to interns working in Des Moines, IA.

Advice

Overall I am incredibly happy with my experience with KPMG this past summer. One piece of advice for interns is to be incredibly attentive to your work. The Big Four accounting firms bring in a ton of interns each summer. Meeting new friends is a great part of the internship, but it's all too easy to get too comfortable and end up not getting a return offer.

business tax services intern

June - August 2019 • Hartford, CT

What I liked

I really liked the team that I worked with and the firm as a whole. Everyone is very driven but they also support the team to the fullest extent and care about everyone at the firm.

What I wish was different

Honestly I had a great experience, I don’t think I would’ve changed anything.

Advice

It’s hard for people to decide between Tax and Audit when they don’t have any experience. I would say if you want to do Tax then you have to prepare for working with the same people in the same environment everyday. Everything is very consistent and straightforward, although it can be difficult. If you want Audit, prepare yourself for traveling and working with different people all the time.

Financial Assurance Intern

June - August 2019 • Houston, TX

What I liked

The internship was an incredible way for me to gain an understanding of KPMG and assurance work. I rotated through three audit clients, and each were very unique from one another in every way. This enabled me to understand a variety of team dynamics and different styles of audit work. The training was comprehensive and enabled me to have hit the ground running on day one. Further, the internship did a fantastic job of building a network and community between the ~100 interns (across a variety of practices). I developed close relationships both with interns and associates, which I hope to continue into the future.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been able to meet one-on-one more frequently with people on the teams which I worked on, to get to know them during my first week of engagements and make it less stressful, but I understand why that is not always possible.

Advice

Give it your all, even if you are certain that a career in assurance is not what you will be pursuing after the internship. The connections that you will make, the knowledge you will gain and the experience you will have is absolutely invaluable. Be engaged on all of your assignments, constantly ask questions and offer your help anywhere you can. Your superiors will notice and it will make a difference, and you will enjoy your job a lot more if you are engaged. Engage with your intern class and develop relationships with them - they will be your future colleagues, or valuable connections, and in my case they will also be your close friends months past the end of your internship.

Deal Advisory Intern

June - August 2019 • Auckland, Auckland Region

What I liked

I loved participating in KPMG's Global Internship Program, which allowed me to spend half of my internship in my home office in San Francisco, CA (Deal Advisory Intern) and half in Auckland, New Zealand (Corporate Finance Intern).

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been longer. It only lasted 8 weeks.

Advice

Be cautious about working at a large firm because there's a lot of bureaucracy. Although it has a great name and brand, you might not actually enjoy the work or the culture.
