This Graduate Assistantship offers an immersive learning opportunity in hazardous materials procurement, inventory control, and safety protocol management. The GA will work with Science Supply—a sub-unit of EHS—responsible for managing chemical, biological, and radiological materials used in research and teaching laboratories. This position is ideal for graduate students in STEM or Pharmaceutical programs seeking hands-on experience with high-hazard material logistics, safety compliance, and database management.
Graduate Assistants will:
Gain expertise in hazardous materials handling and compliance regulations.
Enhance database systems by implementing “red flag” protocols to improve safety response.
Oversee workflows and help train student staff to meet regulatory and departmental standards.
Collaborate with Science faculty, lab staff, and graduate students to support lab operations and safety.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be enrolled full time (9+ credits) in an approved academic program (see below).
Must maintain good academic standing and meet the enrollment requirements.
Must commit to working 20 hours per week as part of the assistantship/fellowship.
Work assignments must align with the student’s academic program and professional development.

Primary Responsibilities
Assist with the safe receipt, handling, storage, and delivery of hazardous chemicals, biological materials, and controlled substances.
Implement procurement and database protocols for identifying and flagging “high haz” items.
Lead and train College Work Study (CWS) staff in safety-compliant workflows.
Maintain and improve inventory databases, including barcode tracking.
Coordinate deliveries with labs and manage centralized waste collection efforts.
Provide quality customer service to science faculty, graduate students, and laboratory staff.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field.
Exceptional computer/database literacy.
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with hazardous materials or laboratory safety protocols.
Knowledge of Banner or similar inventory systems.
Prior experience with science laboratory logistics or compliance.
Compensation & Benefits
New GA Tuition Remission:
$8,750 per semester covering tuition only.
New GA Stipend (Fall through Spring)
$4,000 (Year 1)
This position is offered for one academic year only—Fall 2025 and Spring 2026—provided the student maintains full-time enrollment of at least 9 credits each semester.
