About the Internship
This internship offers the opportunity to be part of the Transportation Planning team in the Tunnels, Bridges, and Terminals (TB&T) department at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ). This internship will involve tracking activity and customer satisfaction at TB&T facilities, analyzing trends, identifying challenges, and researching short- and long-term improvements for TB&T facilities. The Tunnels, Bridges, and Terminals department (TB&T) is the division of Port Authority that operates and maintains the George Washington Bridge, the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels, the Bayonne and Goethals Bridges, the Outerbridge Crossing, and the Midtown Bus Terminal and the George Washington Bridge Bus Station. The Transportation and Revenue Programs Unit manages transportation planning, data analysis, and non-toll revenue programs within TB&T.
Responsibilities
- Organize, conduct, and analyze a public survey of users the three bicycle and pedestrian pathways on TB&T crossings.
- Analyze traffic patterns at TB&T crossings, help to understand usage of the Port Authority Midtown Bus Terminal, and research usage of our pedestrian and bicycle pathways.
- Verify accuracy of technologies used for traffic counts using various data sources.
- Conduct research to better understand new guidelines and technologies in the transportation industry.
- Assist with transportation planning tasks for the TB&T department.
Minimum Qualifications
- Enrollment at a college or university at the time of the internship
- Major in civil engineering, urban planning, systems engineering, transportation planning, transportation systems, data analytics, or related discipline.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Power BI, etc.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, etc.).
- Experience with GIS
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Interest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey region
- Interest in public service and transportation
- Willingness to learn
Internship Details
- The start date will be Thursday, May 28, 2026
- The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 21, 2026
- This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)
- In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits interns to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required depending on business needs. Some internships may require interns to be fully in-person.

Compensation & Benefits
- The hourly rate range is $18.07 to $30.31 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
