Data Analyst (Public Service Administrator, Opt.6C)
Position Overview
The Informatics Section within IDPH’s Division of Patient Safety and Quality advances high-quality, high-value, and equitable health care across Illinois by strengthening the data infrastructure that supports healthcare quality, safety, and broader public health priorities. The Section works across multiple public health programs and data domains, integrating diverse datasets within a secure, scalable cloud environment to support timely, accurate, and actionable insights.
Through modern cloud-based architecture, data engineering, interoperability solutions, and advanced analytics, the Informatics Section designs and manages systems that collect, integrate, and analyze healthcare service utilization, patient safety outcomes, and other public health data. The team enables transparent reporting of healthcare performance, supports cross-program data sharing, and ensures alignment with local, state, and national standards.
The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a Data Analyst within the Informatics Section. This role will support the management, integration, analysis, and rapid dissemination of data across multiple public health programs within a cloud-based ecosystem. The position involves working with large, complex datasets; developing reproducible analytic workflows; identifying trends; and generating insights that inform strategic public health decisions.
The Data Analyst will develop interactive dashboards, create high-quality visualizations, and produce custom reports tailored to diverse stakeholders, including program leadership and external partners. This role plays a critical part in ensuring that cloud-based public health data systems are reliable, interoperable, and capable of supporting data-driven improvements in patient safety and healthcare quality across Illinois.

Essential Functions
- Manipulates large datasets to identify and summarize trends to inform strategic public health decisions.
- Develops effective data visualizations and other tools to communicate key data related to specific healthcare quality issues and select public health priorities.
- Creates custom data reports for a variety of users.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college in public health, biostatistics, mathematics, computer science, data analytics or a closely related area.
- Requires prior experience equivalent to three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience conducting data analysis and creating data visualizations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of MSSQL query, procedures and views.
- One (1) year experience using data visualization software including Tableau and ArcGIS.
- One (1) year experience with Python data manipulation.
- One (1) year experience with statistical modeling of longitudinal data.
- Working knowledge of one (1) or more public health datasets.
- Advanced data analysis skills and proficiency in SAS.
- One (1) year research experience.
