NSF NCSES Data Scientist - National Secure Data Service (NSDS) Demonstration Project

Under direction from a mentor, this ORISE Fellow will learn about the National Secure Data Service (NSDS) Demonstration Project and its associated data linking and analytical activities. The ORISE Fellow will directly participate in projects implementing privacy preserving record linkage (PPRL), synthetic data creation, and noise infusion. The ORISE Fellow will learn about data quality assessments and analysis of linked and synthetic datasets via programming and analytic skills. The ORISE Fellow will collaborate on projects that inform the establishment of a data linkage program at NCSES.

Location

This is a hybrid role and requires in person participation at the NSF Headquarter in Alexandria, Virginia.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by NCSES. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.

Duration 

This Research Fellowship is a 12-month appointment and can be extended for a total period of five years based on performance and need. Note: The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, NSF, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications

  • Strong Data Science background (with programming skills)
  • Ability to participate in a secure data enclave
  • Data cleaning/data standardization/analysis/testing/reviewing
  • Programming for PPRL (SAS/Python)/synthetic data (R)/noise infusion projects
  • Experience developing data tools and other resources
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and team members
  • Demonstrated capacity to participate in a positive and supportive learning environment
  • Capability to participate autonomously and take initiative in completing projects
  • Exhibit a high level of professionalism in all interactions, including communication, appearance, and conduct
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to critically analyze and evaluate complex information, data, and situations to make informed decisions and recommendations
  • Proficiency in written communication, including the capacity to convey ideas, findings, and recommendations clearly and effectively through various written formats
  • Strong research capabilities, including the ability to gather, synthesize, and interpret information from diverse sources to support evidence-based decision-making

Eligibility Requirements

  • Citizenship: LPR or U.S. Citizen
  • Degree: Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 7/31/2024 12:00:00 AM.
