Responsibilities
Health Research, Inc. is seeking an Hourly Project Assistant II to work within the Metropolitan Area Regional Office (MARO) Healthcare Epidemiology and Infection Control (HEIC) Program. Healthcare-associated infections are a major public health problem globally, nationally, and in New York State. The MARO HEIC Program has the mandate of monitoring and investigating cases of healthcare facility-associated infectious diseases in more than 100 hospitals and 330 skilled nursing facilities in the New York City, Long Island, and Mid-Hudson Valley areas. MARO HEIC has the responsibility of managing and investigating more than 1200 annual reports of healthcare facility associated infections submitted through the NYSDOH Health Commerce System’s Nosocomial Outbreak Reporting Application (NORA) as well as cases reported by local health departments.
MARO HEIC epidemiologists have well-established expertise in managing outbreaks of healthcare facility associated infectious disease outbreaks. The incumbent will have the opportunity to work directly with these infection prevention experts, as they perform surveillance work and conduct both virtual and on-site infection control assessments. The incumbent will also work with related outbreak and surveillance data to document these investigations, conduct analyses, and prepare written reports/presentations.
This position is part of the Pathways to Public Health Internship Program. The position will last approximately 10 weeks from 6/2/2025 to 8/8/2025. It is made available through funding from the Center for Disease Control's Public Health Infrastructure Grant to expand opportunities to strengthen career pathways to public health by bringing together students of all disciplines and academic levels with public health professionals to create a space of exploration, learning, and development.
Minimum Qualifications
Currently or within the past six months enrolled in an institution of higher education pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Public Health, Nursing, Biology, Epidemiology, health informatics, data analysis, biostatistics/statistics, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate student in Public Health, Nursing, Biology, Epidemiology or a related field, and/or practical experience with infection prevention activities in a healthcare setting. Practical experience with infection prevention activities in a healthcare setting Experience performing basic statistical analyses of HEIC surveillance data. Familiarity with the Health Commerce System, or a related system, healthcare facility operations, and/or infection prevention and control. Prior experience with clinical and public health surveillance data systems.
Conditions of Employment
Hourly, grant funded position expected to last through 08/8/2025. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.
Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.
The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire. Telecommuting will be available.
