Manufacturing Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Brooklyn Park, MN

What I liked

My mentor was the best thing about my internship at Medtronic. Despite the online setting due to COVID-19, I was able to reach out to him and he was extremely helpful in answering all my questions.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been an opportunity to connect with the other interns through social events.

Advice

Step out of your comfort zone to learn something new. You never know how it may impact you positively in the long run

Industrial Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • North Haven, CT

What I liked

I liked my employer and my team, as well as my peer advisor. I liked the flexibility of having summer hours (8-5pm M-Thurs and 8-12pm on Friday). I liked getting to work on my own projects, as well as projects with my team members. I also liked that I worked on technical projects and projects to improve employee engagement within our team.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have been in person at least for part of my internship.

Advice

Ask so many questions, get involved early on, do not be afraid to not know everything and remember that there is so much you can take away from this experience.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Fridley, MN

What I liked

I enjoyed the projects I got to work on- I was able to make improvements to our manufacturing process, specifically in how scrapped product gets captured. Medtronic also assigns each intern a mentor, who is very helpful to ask questions to and bounce ideas off of. My team was welcoming and made sure I knew that my work was valued.

What I wish was different

Due to the pandemic, the internship was entirely virtual. I would've liked to get into the facility and have more of a hands-on aspect to my projects, particularly being in a manufacturing position, but that just wasn't possible with the current situation.

Advice

My advice would be to make your future career goals known to your manager and other people around the office. I was able to stay on part-time this fall, simply because I mentioned to a few people that I was interested in doing this. You never know who will open doors for you if they just know what your objectives are.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Plymouth, MN

What I liked

Everyone was really nice and supportive. It seemed like everyone was invested in you acheiving goals. I definitely felt like I enjoyed it.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a project sooner. It took a while, but perhaps that's because of the pandemic just started, and my original project was scrapped. I also had difficulty picking something to do right away, mostly because the projects weren't really software development related. The team at Medtronic was great at coming up with ideas for the project! Great group of people.

Advice

Ask questions. Bother the heck out of your team. They know you're learning and it's expected to be bothersome.

Design engineer

January - August 2022 • Mounds View, MN

What I liked

I liked that I was apart of projects that meant something. I have heard of Co-ops or internships that are given projects that are already solved or have minimal affect on the overall project/company

What I wish was different

Not really too much, the Co-op class as well as the company of Medtronic pushed me to make connections and supported outside of main job learning. An example of this is being apart of anatomy classes and writing seminars.

Advice

I would say yes focus on connects but what really put in the wow factor for my employers was my hard work and communication skills. Word spread faster and with such detail that I was excited to receive compliments and rewards based on my efforts and ambitions.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • Brooklyn Center, MN

What I liked

I loved the welcoming environment. They valued my input which made me feel like a valued team member. They also trusted me to take on projects independently which helped me grow a ton.

What I wish was different

I wish I had pushed myself even further past my comfort zone and connected with other interns more.

Advice

Jump right into any experience and opportunity available including networking, projects, and more. Do not be timid to jump in head-first into things because that is what will help you get the most out of your internship. Employers also recognize when you are self-motivated and it is definitly something they look for.

June - August 2021 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I liked how helpful everyone at Medtronic was. Everyone was willing to provide whatever resources necessary to ensure that I succeed, answer any questions I had as an intern, and they treated me like an employee; no one was ever condescending or anything regarding my youth & inexperience as I began the internship

What I wish was different

I wish it was in person (it was switched to virtual) so that I could have had a more personal & hands on experience

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, don’t let you being an intern discourage you, NETWORK. TALK TO EVERYONE YOU CAN.

Data Engineer Intern

June - August 2022 • Mounds View, MN

What I liked

The people, environment, and culture were all amazing things about my internship. Every person I met was encouraging and always open for discussion. My manager was awesome, my team was awesome, the other interns were awesome, and there were a lot of events to help me get to know Medtronic better. I would highly recommend applying to this company. Medtronic is very mission driven.

What I wish was different

The application process was slower than other company's were.

Advice

Be your genuine self. If you are interested in any part of the Medtronic mission, show it. Be an intern and ask questions.

Co-Op/Apprentice

June 2021 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

The openness of the people around me.

What I wish was different

That Covid hadn't been a thing so that I could have worked in the office instead of virtually.

Advice

Get used to asking questions. Not knowing the answer is fine, but not pursuing that knowledge isn't. Also, make sure to take advantage of your role as an intern and reach out to various employees around the company whose job interests you. Emailing them out of the blue is perfectly fine as long as you explain how you'll benefit from their time.
